But Buffy worried about what Sokka now saw as lost. She considered her words as she watched the thrown shells sink.

"Of course he is. They had a whole life here..."

"You know -- his grand-things showed up." Kerplunk -- another shell in the water. "She could come back."

I've come back twice now.

"She could come back, sure. Younger and memoryless.

Any of us could."

Jack knew that very well. It was information he often hid from, or at least tried not to dwell on. "Water's beautiful tonight."

"It might actually be beautiful every night. Say what you will about kidnappings and experiments and...other stuff -- the place is pretty. All around."

Buffy lined her shells up on the dock before reaching out for his hand. "But I guess there might be a certain something extra pretty, tonight."

She paused, unsure whether she should approach this subject after some of the stranger elements of the day. But: "Hey. Did you mean it? About the electricity?"

"Aye. I meant it. And...and chairs."

Because James had said.....and she deserved it. Them. She deserved proper chairs.

"It's about time. I don't even want to think about what those crates might have been doing to your posture."

A light enough joke, sure. But below the fun and games, she was surprisingly excited at the prospect of Cullen House becoming a little more...home-like.

"You just tell me what other things you want, eh? We've already -- there'll be a weapons room. And a large closet. Two. Two closets in our...in mine. My room."

[herotypical]

"Slow down, cowboy. Let's just start with the only real must-haves, okay? Hot showers and somewhere to plug in my hair dryer. Everything else can wait.

Except for, y'know, the actual house part. Kinda need one of those."

Two closets? He was going overboard. Overcompensating. Overplanning. Buffy squeezed his fingers lightly. "Don't make me whip out another back in Luceti's old days lecture."

"Fine. Electricality. And a house." He kissed her hand. "Meant it, though: you've got to tell me the other things you want."

"I'm not sure that's exactly the wisest thing for me to do..."

[all7seas]

"What? Whyever not?!"

[herotypical]

"You just jumped straight from the bare necessities of electricity to some kind of double-closeted mansion. My tastes just don't run that lavish."

A thoughtful pause. "Though, I've always wondered what it might be like to have a real walk-in closet..."

[all7seas]

He made a careful mental note to ask someone what a "walk-in closet" was.

"Me too, funnily enough. Always."

[herotypical]

"But for now? Let's just work on getting a roof up."

With that so vaguely settled, Buffy leaned back and tried to draw his dreads aside. She needed to see the damage.

[all7seas]

"First? Need to get the materials and get 'em to the beach," Jack said more practically. That would be the most laborious part, really. That would be where her strength became of paramount importance.

With a firm touch, she tilted his back towards her. Sure enough -- there was a sorta-can-shaped bruise on his skin. Buffy shook her head; she'd been too rough. Treated him too much like...

"Which ones first? I can get started ASAP. Or. ASA-Tomorrow."

"James and me have been looking for scraps tossed up on shore. We'll need help with that."

Anything usable that could be recycled WOULD be recycled, and there was certainly wreckage on the beach. Nothing, though, from the Joanna Joyce; and Jack watched with keen eyes each time a new board or bit of plank washed up on the shore. So far, though, his Joanna was not among the casualties.

"And there's downed lumber aplenty back in the village. People have been clearing it from their yards for weeks.

It just needs...actual lumbering. Cutting and sanding. Whatever that's called."

"I can do that. Luceti, though -- needs a sawmill." Planing wood was such hot, sweaty, laborious work, especially with the tools they had available.

"Thunderaxe might loan me his chainsaw if he's feelin' magnanimous."

"I can get you his chainsaw. Seriously. Me and him are practically besties. Nothing glues two friends together like the great paste of punnery.

Except, perhaps, real glue. Have you ever done that? Accidentally superglued yourself to someone or something? It's not a good time."

"And that, ladies and gentlemen, is the face of a man who's never been in the third grade."

"Mmhm. And now the sudden bafflement of the same man who probably never knew the school-kid source of joy that is pizza day. Arguably the best day of the week."
