So Jack turned his head slightly to face her and give her his most appealing possible look ever.

"Oh. Please? Please, a cheer? For myself?"

[herotypical]

"A cheer for you. A you-cheer. You know, you won't exactly be pleased with all the rhymes a gal could come up with for Sparrow."

Ugh. Not the look. Anything but the look!

MORE LOOK! MORE!

"And the skirt? With it? If you please?"

[herotypical]

She covered up those heartbreaking eyes with an icy, chill palm.

"No skirt. One cheer. If I can remember one."

[all7seas]

"One cheer, then." Jack was more than willing to accept that compromise.

[herotypical]

"But!" He would not get away from this unscathed. "I'm gonna need some audience participation. Cheerleaders do just that. They lead a cheer. That implies that there's also gotta be some following.

Pick two colours. Your hypothetical team colours."

"Black.



And a slightly darker black."

She looked at him. But soon realizing that the look's usefulness was wasted when she had his sights still covered, Buffy spread her fingers. She met his eyes.

"...Oh, heck no. Slightly darker black is not gonna cut it. You'll have to deal with -- hmm. Black and red."

"Black and red're BLACKBEARD'S colors!"

"But when it comes to wings, I--"

Buffy pinched the bridge of her nose. "Okay, okay. Pick a second, easier to say colour."

So much drama for one mediocre cheer.

"......................Gray, I suppose."

[herotypical]

"This is the dreariest looking non-existent sports team I've ever had to force myself into imagining."

Buffy leaned backwards just long enough to free her legs from the horrid position in which she'd been kneeling. Then, sitting up straight, she dropped the ice-pack onto the bed between them. "When I point at you? You gotta repeat the last line I just said. Like a call and answer thing. Only...quietly. 'Cause it's night and people might be asleep and we're not really at a football game. Got it?"

"Got it!"

He pulled himself into a sitting position and sat with legs crossed on the bed.

"Now. Cheer me!"

She looked unconvinced that this would prove to be a good time. Mostly? She felt a little embarrassed. Cheering was so far behind her. She'd last donned a uniform back when she was sixteen and since that hadn't panned out, she'd thrown herself into her Slaying.

But she remembered this and that. A cheer or two. She kicked into the first one with a sing-song whisper:

"Ready?" Clap. "Okay!
Hey," another clap, "hey Sparrow crowd,
we want you to yell real loud!
Yell: Gooooo black!"

And that was Jack's cue, because she was pointing at him and waiting for his response before she dared to continue with the chant.

"What -- now? I do it now?"

Oh. That pointed finger started to jab. Insistently.

[all7seas]

"Go ---- black."

[herotypical]

After a mid-chant reception like that one, her (already low) enthusiasm took something of a nosedive. But she was halfway through! She couldn't stop now!

"Mighty Sparrows, we're cheering for you.
Yell: Goooo grey!"

This time, her pointing finger ended up right under his nose.

"Gooooo grey!" This time he responded with considerably more enthusiasm.

"Yell it loud and yell it clear," more clapping -- it was an integral part of any cheer. But each one made her more and more sheepish.

"S-P-A-DOUBLE-R-O-W. This is our year.
We're here to prove. We're on the move.
We'll take it to the top. We're the mighty Sparrows and we won't be stopped!"

She ended the simple chant with a self-conscious shrug and a dismissive wave. "That's...it."

Well THAT wouldn't do. She sounded about ready to give up on him rather than the opposite.

So Jack yelled:

"SPADOUBLEROW! MY YEAR! ON THE MOVE! ME AND ANNIE ARE MIGHTY SPARROWS AND WILL NOT BE STOPPED!"

[herotypical]

"...Shhh! Jack," she lunged forward and grabbed for him. "What did I tell you about it being late? And people sleeping? And cheerleading kinda being lame to begin with and would you just--"

And then she gave a little shriek because in all her rush to stop him, she'd trapped the very very cold bag of frozen vegetables under a thigh and the sudden chill had taken her by surprise.

So much for keeping quiet. Buffy -- brusque and dishevelled -- stood up.

"Annie? 'M sorry. Don't. Here..."

He picked up the bag and climbed out of the bed. "I'll just.....freezer. With these. And...


Sorry."

[herotypical]

"Nah, it was...spirited. Lots of spirit."

She stayed near and picked an errant thread off his upper arm. Transferred from somewhere on the bed, she thought.

"I liked the cheer. I feel......cheered. Cheery."

He nervously passed the bag from one hand to the other.
