"Jack," Buffy straightened, dropping the now ammoless bow. He was cut, albeit not fatally. And so these seconds she now spend worrying over him ensured Drusilla's escape.
"Oh my God. Come here."
Buffy drew him into a hug.

That admission was whispered forcefully. Jack hugged her back. "No escapes here. None. And I want you to be surrounded by beautiful...beauty. Joy. And."
He was babbling, now; almost lightheaded with anger and regret and grief.
Regret. Guilt. Oh, how he'd always hated hated HATED those feelings. The instinct? To run. To buggering bloody well RUN. FAR. AWAY.

It was unnerving to have her touch the wings when so much of his back felt like it was on fire. Not unpleasant, exactly -- but not comfortable.

Screw conflict. Screw tension. Screw the still unsettled argument. Buffy wrapped an arm around his waist and snuggled in close, needing to feel his warmth as a proof of his life. Love came sharply into perspective once again when that love was threatened.

Oh. She shut her mouth so fast. That was one confession that was long-coming. "It's a very weird experience."

She was so easy to pull to a halt. So so easy. But she did try and shrug her arm free.

"Why don't you just tell me," came the flat, tired response. So un-Jack-like.

Hurt." Her hand flew to her face, touching where the scratch had once been. But only for a moment. Fleeting.
"It was more of a slurp than a bite." How quickly the information tumbled free now that she had started to share was a testament to how much she still did trust this man beside her. "No less disturbing, though."

Jack had taken slightly longer to learn that lesson, really.
