I mean, when Derek--"

Oh. She shut her mouth so fast. That was one confession that was long-coming. "It's a very weird experience."

Jack pulled her to a halt. "When Derek what." Yes, he was bleeding in the dark damp woods and suddenly feeling very chilled. Stiff. A warm bath would do wonders. But maybe this needed to be sorted now.

"He didn't bite me, if that's what you're asking..."

She was so easy to pull to a halt. So so easy. But she did try and shrug her arm free.

Jack sighed as she did that. His own hands fell limp to his sides. Fine. Let her go and just....let her. Be. Bugger.

"Why don't you just tell me," came the flat, tired response. So un-Jack-like.

"It was...the fight. Obviously. He wasn't himself and I was--

Hurt." Her hand flew to her face, touching where the scratch had once been. But only for a moment. Fleeting.

"It was more of a slurp than a bite." How quickly the information tumbled free now that she had started to share was a testament to how much she still did trust this man beside her. "No less disturbing, though."

She hugged herself. "It's life."

It was, really: Barbossa's cursed crew had learned that there was more to life than pleasure, and that pleasure without life was nothing.

Jack had taken slightly longer to learn that lesson, really.


"Come on, love. All will be better tomorrow."

Exhaling, she tucked her arm once more in his.

"Promise?"

He'd make it so. Somehow...somehow he would make it so.
