It was the day after meeting Clementine's friend and Jack was feeling remarkably petty over the meeting. The next day, he made it obvious he was unhappy about something. So when Buffy arrived and didn't appear to immediately notice and come to console him, he decided to just announce his displeasure the moment they weren't busy.

"New Feathers!" He did a good job acting livid. "Clem tried to drag one home. Do you believe that? She wanted him to live with us!"

...Buffy looked up from a particularly vexing sudoku puzzle, slotting the pencil behind her ear and pushing up from the counter. She'd been leaning forward against its edges and she found her arms felt a little dead. The Slayer rubbed life back into her joints.

"Isn't that what kids are supposed to do? Bring home strays?" Her eyes were a-glow with scepticism.

He ignored her practical reply and continued to feel put upon by the whims of the child he had claimed responsibility for. The very same child who had managed to not score him a single woman yet, despite that being her job.

"I don't care that it was her long lost buddy from her home. He got all in my face just because she picked up a little language from me. Like he's one to talk. At least I didn't have her hanging around zombies."

"Wait a tick," she turned -- arms braced against the sink's edge and elbows straightened. Buffy's head tilted. "Oh my God. You're in the middle of a good old fashioned Luceti custody battle..."

She'd heard tell of it before, now and then. New relationships strained by the sudden arrival of old ones. Hadn't she herself felt a little jealousy when Giles had taken an interest in teaching the Suzumiya girl?

"It's not a custody battle, Buffy. Don't be ridiculous."

Fuck. It's a custody battle.

"Besides, she's still staying with me. So she obviously likes me more than that loser."

"...You just somehow convinced a kid to stay split up from the first familiar face she sees and you're counting this as a victory?"

"Uh... yeah? Why wouldn't it be?"

"Well? Is this someone even remotely important to her in the slightest bit?"

"I dunno. He said he lost an arm for her."

Jack said it in a way that seemed to imply he thought Lee was being over dramatic.

[herotypical]

"...Jeez." Such a sacrifice was kind of a big deal, wasn't it? At least, Buffy believed so. But she had a moralistic streak about three miles wide. "Tell me exactly how it went down. Clementine brought him home and you just...what? Kicked him right back out? Made her choose?"

"I was nice. Super nice. I shook his hand and pretended to like him. I just told him he couldn't live with us. And then Clementine said 'fucking' and he flipped out on me. You should've been there, Buffy. The guy was nuts. I'm just glad Clementine wasn't in the room to see it."

[herotypical]

"...Right. Because of your deep-seated commitment to shielding her from all the badness. No one likes to see their daddy-figures fighting."

Okay, okay. Calm down, Summers. Play at least a little nice. But -- sometimes -- it was nice to let loose the old cruel humour. She'd toned it down for most others in Luceti.

Jack frowned. "I'm not a daddy-figure. I'm her... big buddy. Her cool uncle."

"...Cool uncle."

"Awesome uncle," he clarified.

[herotypical]

"In TV-land, the awesome uncles always turn out to be deadbeats with no direction, no job, and no dignity."

"Clearly you never watched Full House."

Jack saw an episode of it once. Uncle Jesse was awesome.

"I could never get over the fact that Michelle was played by twins. Does that not creep you out?"

"I'm serious! It got too distracting trying to figure out which one she was on any given episode.

My point still stands, though. You're being kind of an asshole."

"Of course! I'm the bad guy!"

Jack threw his hands up in the air and rolled his eyes.

[herotypical]

"At least suggest he move in next door. Nearby. Make some kind of effort. Do you really wanna be the guy who starts sounding like he's running a one-kid cult?"

Seriously. Cutting people off from their loved ones? Red flag number one.

"I did that. I told him there was plenty of places to crash there. What do you take me for?" Jack pretended to be insulted.

"...Apparently, I take you for the kind of guy who cares whether he gets to look after a kid or not." A beat. "Which was supposed to sound like an insult, but it didn't really come out that way. Did it?"

It may have sounded like a compliment, but it left Jack feeling vaguely conflicted over why he wanted to keep Clementine so much. This only made him annoyed. "Well kids are a rare commodity in Luceti. At least the little ones."

And then he realized that defense of his own indifference to the world only made him sound creepy. Dammit. "... and she's really interesting in conversations. Really."
