voice + action ✪ there must be some way to bring the hero home

[ after a week of agonizing combat, buffy summers returns home with only exhaustion on her mind. despite all the excitement and crisis, there's little left to do other than collapse onto her bed and fall into a sleep fit for a weary, worn-out soul. morning sees her feeling no less -- shudder -- zombieish. the horror of the last week is bone-and-marrow deep and has yet to fully make itself known in her system. the slayer is running on auxillery humanity, stringing herself along from second to second until she can find a friendly face. find willow and...

and all she finds is an empty room. an empty closet. empty drawers. her best friend is gone. deported while she wasn't even looking. come the afternoon, after she's gotten the first onslaught of emotions out of her system, buffy sits alone on the empty bed. she addresses her journal: ]

Willow and I have this game we like to play. Willow Rosenberg. She was in town...but now she's not. [ a pause allows buffy to catch her breath. to stay strong. ] We call it 'Anywhere But Here' -- self-explanatory, really. Pick a fantasty-elsewhere to be and a fantasy-someone to share it with. I'm not talking about the obvious ones: home or family or anything even remotely whiffing of responsibility. I'm talking about fun. I'm talking about pure escapism. I'm talking Daniel Craig on the beach or Amy Yip at the waterpark.

I'll go first. Show you how it's done. [ but which escape route from reality should she take? ] The '88 Winter Olympics. The Saddledome. Calgary, of all places. Brian Boitano is taking the time to personally skate me through his gold medal routine. Perhaps there's hot chocolate involved. I, being made entirely of my own imagination, copy each move perfectly.

Got it? Good. Because now it's your turn.

[ when her broken little tribute to an absent friend is finished, she'll be searching out her injured pirate (wherever he may be convalescing) and it's off to good spirits, where she can be found working a shift behind the bar. ]

[... ah, so Willow's gone. That just leaves four from their world. He can only wonder what state Buffy is in. Unfortunately it's daytime and going to see her is not much of an option. Voice it is.]

I wouldn't mind a second shot at Amelia Earhart. Damn fine woman, she was. The two of us could be up in a Continental, sailing over the clouds. Flying in style.

Oh, that's easy! I'd be following Oda Nobunaga with a campaign on Mars...! [...] Or wait, no, actually, let's make it King Arthur. The martians are probably peaceful, and I think he'd be more open to dealing with that than Nobunaga...

[And not for the first time Zack is intensely grateful to have missed out on this draft. Seems like there was an awful lot of hell to be had.

Distractions are always great.]

Mm... I'm thinking Costa del Sol, in June, with Belinda Valentine. Bikinis and beach volleyball.

At the great library there is a particular balcony from which one can see two other galaxies.

There, on a warm night, with a particular lady, watching the stars drift by. That and nothing more.

[Not really one for the game, and kind of busy cleaning up the mess the ghosts made of the tea shop, she doesn't answer Buffy or anything. At least not in the usual way.

Instead she shows up at Good Spirits later. Everyone around here could use a drink, huh?]

If she makes her way to the old clinic, Buffy will find Jack propped up in the very room Bones had taken him to so long ago -- shoulder bandaged and left arm in a sling, wrapped tightly to his body. He is reading a comic book about Batman to pass the time, but doing so rather listlessly. In spite of the bustle of medical personnel, Jack is bored and lonesome in the clinic.

And then there are the nightmares, which haven't helped with his sleep much. Strong medications have been necessary to help him get the rest he needs to heal.

More than anything he wants to be aboard the Joanna again. A small polaroid of the boat sits on his bedside table, along with the now-wrinkled and sort of battered photos from Dawn's party: one of Buffy alone, smiling, in Good Spirits, and the other of Buffy, Dawn, and Archie.

Foodvalten's got these amazing cliffs. They're nearly death to navigate, extremely high and getting through them is monstrously difficult. Growing things there is even harder, but the people are clever as hell. They manage and then some. Harvest time, no wait, the feast right after harvest -- [Screw working] when they've got the feathered headdresses -- [Aw yes, feather love] and everyone comes together to show off all the amazing stuff they grew.

That's my current pick.

[ And it's during said shift that a thirty-something Japanese guy walks into Good Spirits. He doesn't come in often. When he did, typically it was just to drag Heisuke out, but well, Heisuke's not here anymore.

After the draft, he's not felt too keen on staying in the house for too long at a time, so! Pulling up a bar stool, looking maybe a tad uncomfortable. Or maybe irritable? ]

A castle in the sky!!! [ If she has to choose anywhere for a fantasy, that's always going to be the option. "Who with" took a few minutes to figure out, though, when she'd listened to this. The answer she would have given to that for her entire life would have been "grandpa", or one of the other relatives she'd never had a chance to get to know.

The people she lives with, here, who aren't fantasies or memories at all. It took Ikki a little while to think about who she would invite along with her now that those people were real and off-limits for a sort of fantasy game. ]

Aaaaaand I think Avatar Yangchen? She was the last airbender, before grandpa. [ They. Don't have that many celebrities at home, save probenders, and she's only recently been allowed to listen to matches and has only really seen one in her entire life. ] Oh, and Little Red could come, too!!! And if I get to pick what we're doing, we'd be flying our castle allllllllllll over the world! Like a big ship! And then we'd have a tea party!

Sokka sat down at the bar, for a moment giving Buffy a concerned look. But he spoke up before any sentiment could be shared.

"The Northern Air Temple. At one of the tall towers. Just high enough that all the gears turning and heavy machinery are just a soft hum in the background. From up there, you can sort of see the ground, but mostly all you see are the clouds around you. It's pretty cold, but that's fine, I'm pretty good at keeping warm. And besides, I brought one of those cute girls from Ba Sing Se. She's pretty easily impressed by my slinging some slang with my not-so-insignificant haiku skills."

Gerald Butler - and let's say Venice, because then we have the added benefit of the guy who rows the boats and sings in the background. There's dark chocolate, sweet wine, and warm sunshine, and just enough laughter in the background to make things interesting.

There's always a bit of an echo when they make entries from the House. Jilly can hear Buffy's voice, faint after being muffled by the door, and louder where it projects from her open journal.

Rather than responding over the pages, she quietly shut the book and set it next to her bed before making her way down the hall to knock lightly on Buffy's door. She doesn't wait for the Slayer to open it, though, instead sticking her head in before speaking.

"The Tombs--that's the section of Newford that's pretty much been abandoned. Old warehouses and apartment complexes and such--with Babe and her Gemin. You would have liked them. Magic and music and something really really special and beautiful in that place."

[personal profile] want_take_have 2012-11-08 03:45 am (UTC)(link)
She doesn't want to care. Coming home from the draft had left her bruised and exhausted and--not that she wanted to admit it--angry...because what was the point of caring and playing the hero if you were just gonna lose? As good as it had felt to be active and fighting again, the added complexity of the infested had taken their emotional toll. All Faith wanted right now was to sleep.

...But after ignoring the entry for a few hours, it keeps gnawing at her. So, finally, she throws on a jacket and slumps down to Good Spirits. When she steps inside, she makes her way straight to the bar, sinking onto one of the barstools as she sought to catch Buffy's eye.

"Yo."
