"..." Katara can't help but laugh. "Buffy, I have no idea what you're talking about."

All in one rush of breath: "In my world, monks are celibate! As in...non-procreating. As in..."

Surely, Katara must be getting her drift by now.

"Oh - oh." Pffff. Katara smiled and shook her head. "I'm not sure if the air nomads ever married, I mean, they had separate temples for men and women, but they still... procreated. So I'm not... exactly sure how that worked."

...and this was a topic, she decided, that she never needed to bring up with Aang. Ever.

"Then I guess you have that to look forward to--?"

Oh God. Buffy managed to actually blush. To fluster. "S-sorry. Sometimes, my foot lives in my mouth."

Whoops. But all Buffy can really think about is...well, some day? You're going to. However, that was not the most supportive of responses.

So the Slayer shrugs apologetically. "Sorry. Just...trying to inject some quirky levity. Y'know, I'm sure everyone's been reaching out suffocating you with pity you don't want -- don't get me wrong. I feel terrible about how you've had all this dumped on you. But...

But here's an exercize in finding the bright side. You? You live. Long enough to have a family. That's pretty exciting. And not just kids but grandkids."

Buffy made the point knowing full well that both of their respective mothers had never had that chance.

That. Was true, at least. And something in her softens at it before a fresh, and far fiercer horror rears its head. She probably shouldn't say anything. She probably should let it go--

"...but Aang doesn't. He dies ten years before Ikki is even born."

"He...oh."

And when Buffy had learned it about Giles, she...

"That's still a full and long life, right?"

At least it is by HER WORLD'S standards. She didn't know whether life-spans were the same for Katara's world.

Depends who you talk to. Depends on what happened. So many interlocking, long stories to tell, so much to explain.

Instead, she just speaks from her heart.

"It's still too soon."

"I'm not sure it's ever not too soon, when it comes to death. For those of us left behind. God, I've mourned men who have had two centuries on me. It still didn't seem like long enough."

"Yeah."

What else was there to say to that, really? Her shoulders round a little defensively as she curled in on herself. Just thinking about it...

"I'm guessing I don't need to tell you to make the most of what you do have, right?"

"I can't be with him like he wants me to be. Just - skip over any actual feeling and say I'll be with him just because I make that choice in the future? I can't do that. That's not what he wants, and that's not fair to me either. But now that I know all this..."

I don't know how I can even think about giving him a chance without running away screaming.

"No one's asking you to be someone else -- and if they are? They deserve a black eye. Be there for him as a friend. Sometimes? That means way more than any other kind of feeling."

For Buffy, friendship often trumped love.

"Yeah. Maybe."

She just didn't know. She just didn't know anything anymore.

"...That's what I plan to do with the someone I apparently end up sleeping with shows up here, one day. Trust me -- it's also one of the last someones I ever expected to end up with. Even briefly.

But there's no way we can make ourselves ready for that. Not prematurely."

Normally, there would be an avenue of questions for Katara to pursue here - but the thought of foreknowledge of that kind of intimacy, even discussing that kind of intimacy with the way her current love life is, made her so uncomfortable and twisted up inside that she didn't want to dwell on it.

"I know." She glanced down over the road, "I should probably get back."

Buffy pressed a hand to Katara's elbow.

"Thanks for...talking to me. To feel like you can. I -- I'm here. For whenever. And on the plus side? I'm pretty much agendaless. Unless you count wanting to see you happy as an agenda."

Right. Wanting to see her happy. At the moment, that was the farthest thing from her mind. She just wanted... to make everything all right. At least she felt a little calmer now that she'd properly flipped out.
