She squinted at him. No one, she believed, wanted a present that regurgitates its own stomach.

"I thought she could maybe read Alice to Ikki."

"Will she? Who's Alice?"

"...She's a girl who takes a wrong turn into adventure and mayhem. And it turns out that adventure and mayhem have all kinds of neat life lessons to teach her." She leaned back on the palms of her hands and recalled Dr. Primrose's words: "About things that can't ever be fully known. About mob rule. About questioning authority."

There had been a lesson buried in that appointment. She could see it, now. Clear as day. Buffy finished off with her very own words: "Even when questioning it means losing your head."

"Sounds like a very brave girl, this Alice."

"Not really. She's kinda dim and annoying, actually. But..."

But Buffy used to like Alice an awful lot. In fact, she'd always associated the story with the earliest memories she had of her father.

"But it's fun. Good for kids, I guess. And maybe for Katara too..."

"..." Katara can't help but laugh. "Buffy, I have no idea what you're talking about."

"She's one of your girls, Katara. I get it, love."

She kept her eyes trained on the man who had shot her father. Or her not-father -- she supposed -- though in her darkest moments since the daft, the difference didn't seem to matter.

"I just hope she doesn't find out. I don't think she much likes being one of anyone's anythings. Which just makes her even stronger of a candidate, really."

Hank and the clinic and Dr. Primrose continued to swim through her mind. Funny how the Doctor in the dream hadn't been her...good. Buffy wouldn't have liked that.

Gentler: "How's your back?"

All in one rush of breath: "In my world, monks are celibate! As in...non-procreating. As in..."

Surely, Katara must be getting her drift by now.

That would be a similar experience shared between Angelica and Buffy, then. He'd killed both of their fathers after a fashion.

"Eh? Oh. It's. Fine." He tossed his dreads back a bit, covering the offending mark.

"I wasn't trying to hurt you," she promised. "Just...hinder you. A little. I--"

There had been something about the sight of him running away that had activated some basic, unhappy part of her. She'd been unable to take it in good fun.

"I should've aimed for your feet. I shouldn't have aimed at all."

"Annie?" He reached for her hand again, this time with a small, pristine white shell to give. "Flattering, you aiming for me like that."

"Flattering?" She transferred all the leaning duties to one arm and reached over to lift this third shell from him. "You have to explain the mental acrobatics that went into that conclusion..."

"You could have wanted some other chap not to leave." Into her possession went the shell. "But instead you wanted me."
